P2G(Power to Gas)
P2G is a technology that produces hydrogen by electrolyzing water with electricity from solar or wind power as one of energy storage technologies. When the produced hydrogen is reacted with carbon dioxide(CO₂)again, methane (CH₄)can be produced. In particular, since carbon dioxide is used to produce methane, it is a technology that is receiving attention recently because it can recycle the carbon dioxide collected from thermal power plants.
P2G operation method
- 1st stage
- Electrolysis Electrolysis(4H2O → 4H2 + 2O2 + Heat)
- Hydrogen(H₂)is produced through the electrolysis of water by using the surplus power produced during peak hours.
- Used in industrial sites and FCEVs
- 2nd stage
- Methanization Methanization(CO2 + 4H2 → CH4 + 2H2O + Heat)
- The produced hydrogen is put into the gas pipe line and reacted with carbon dioxide(CO₂)to be stored and used as fuel of methane or ammonia, which are the main components of natural gas.
- 3rd stage
- Net Reaction (CO₂ + 2H₂O → CH₄ + 2O₂ + Heat)
- Another way to methanate carbon dioxide (CO2)(CO₂)
